"Strength is Beauty" by David Hickey

Dates: May 17, 2008 to June 15, 2008
Location: The Ethel Curry Gallery
David's paintings start with a metal canvas, on which he builds up successive layers of opaque and transparent paints. The work is then burnished using a metal die grinder. Successive layers of paint may be added to complete the work. The burnishing process has both a sense of control and uncertainty; a combination that David finds rewarding. This show is in support of "Cottage Dreams Cancer Recovery Initiative" a registered charity that offers recent cancer survivors the opportunity to spend a week at a private, donated cottage to reconnect and rejuvenate with family and friends after successfully completing treatment. Please come in and check out David's painting "A Sense of Belonging" which David has created specially for this fund raiser. Purchase a ticket and you may win this beautiful painting, in addition to supporting this worthwhile charity. Meet the artist Saturday May 17th between 12:00 and 3:00 pm.

"Paint Life: Paint Light: Paint Joy..." John David Anderson

Dates: June 19, 2008 to July 9, 2008
Location: The Ethel Curry Gallery
New works from the plein air and studio of John David Anderson. John is an award winning painter, who teaches, demonstrates and lectures from his experiences. Haliburton School of the Arts have included him in their summer program teaching introductory and advanced plein air technique along with composition and colour theory and practice.
After devoting a number of years to agribusiness, John once again focused on painting. Through private instruction and personal study, John has continued to grow and refine his personal vision as an artist.

"My work evolved from the oil painter's perspective of brush on canvas. I use paint tonally applied with rich colour and an impressionist character. The subject does not drive the composition but the force of light, however muted or powerful, creates a path that becomes the essence of the composition for me. Movement throughout my work is directed by the interplay of warm and cool colour. Fluctuating emphasis of light and shadow along with the use of lost and found edges enhances that movement."
Meet the artist Saturday June 28th between 12:00 and 3:00 pm.
